Homemade Pizza & Pasta Sauce

Homemade Pizza & Pasta Sauce

This bright, zesty tomato sauce is perfect for any sort of homemade pizza or pasta dish. It’s my go-to, all-purpose red sauce recipe. This week, I made a double batch to use for both calzones and a veggie-loaded beef lasagna. It’s perfect for making up ahead of time and can be kept in the freezer to have on hand for busy weeknights. I know grabbing a jar off the grocery store shelf is super convenient, but I promise this recipe is super easy too. Plus it doesn’t have any of the added sugar, seed oils, or preservatives you may find in the store bought version.

Can I use fresh tomatoes instead of canned?

Yes! However, if you use fresh tomatoes without cooking them down first, the sauce will be on the thin side and won’t have as concentrated of a tomato flavor. What I do during the summer when I have TONS of tomatoes in the garden, is I roughly chop them up (peels and all) and dump them in a big stock pot. I cook them down for a couple of hours until they’ve thickened up a bit. Then I blend them with my immersion blender and freeze them in 28oz portions. Whenever I want to make a batch of sauce, I just pull a couple portions out of the freezer! So yes, you can totally use fresh tomatoes, but there is this extra step.

How to Make Homemade Pizza & Pasta Sauce

In a large stock pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté at least until they turn translucent and begin to soften. For a more caramelized flavor, continue cooking until they begin to brown.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds to a minute, stirring frequently. Then add the salt, basil, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder and stir to combine. When I have it available in the garden, I always use fresh basil instead of dried. I generally use the rule of 1 tsp dried = 1 Tbs fresh, but when it comes to fresh basil, you can always add more!

Then add the tomatoes. You can use crushed, diced, whole, or puréed tomatoes for this recipe (or fresh tomatoes that you’ve cooked down to 56oz). If using whole canned tomatoes, crush them with your hands before adding to the pot. I like to use the San Marzano variety whenever available since they are the classic Italian sauce tomato.

Bring all the ingredients to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency, about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and blend with an immersion blender until smooth. The sauce can be used right away or stored for later in the refrigerator or freezer.

Serving Suggestions

This Homemade Pizza & Pasta Sauce is very versatile. Spread it on a sourdough pizza crust and top with fresh mozzarella, pasture raised sausage or Organic Valley pepperoni, and of course, lots of veggies!

You can also mix some browned ground beef and onions into the sauce and serve it over pasta (or zoodles/spaghetti squash for low carb options) for an easy Bolognese. I also like using it as the sauce for my lasagna that I pack with veggies, cottage cheese, and ground beef for extra fiber and protein. The possibilities really are endless!
