Peppermint Puppy Chow

Peppermint Puppy Chow

Peppermint Puppy Chow (aka Muddy Buddies) is a fun, wintery spin on the classic peanut butter chocolate treat. In this version, I used dark chocolate, natural peanut butter, and a little splash of peppermint extract. You could even add some crushed candy canes at the end to make it more festive! (Just be sure to use naturally colored ones like Yum Earth!)

Puppy chow has always been one of my favorite treats/snacks this time of year. There’s just something about the crunchy cereal covered in chocolate peanut butter goodness with a dreadfully-messy-but-totally-worth-it powdered sugar coating. For some reason we only had it around Christmastime as a kid, so that’s the only time I ever think to make it. Which is probably a good thing considering how addicting it can be–I’m better off not having it around most of the year!

Directions

Start by measuring out the cereal and placing it in a large bowl or container with a lid. Set aside.

In a small saucepan on low heat, add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Stir often until everything is melted together. Remove from heat and stir in the peppermint extract.

Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal and stir gently until all cereal is coated. Add the powdered sugar and seal the bowl or container. Shake the bowl until all the cereal is coated in powdered sugar. If you don’t have a bowl with a lid, you could also use a gallon-sized Ziploc bag–just be sure to double bag it!

When everything is evenly coated, spread the puppy chow on wax paper to cool. Transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature for a couple days or in the refrigerator or freezer for longer storage.
