Spiced Date Scones with Browned Butter Glaze

These scones feature warm spices and rich, caramelly Medjool dates. Topped with an astounding browned butter glaze, these scones are tough to pass up!

  • 3 Tbsp skim milk
  • ¼ tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 2 Tbsp sucanat
  • 1 Tbsp + ¼ tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • tsp cloves
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 7 Tbsp butter cold
  • ¾ cup applesauce unsweetened
  • 3 Tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 cup chopped Medjool dates

Glaze (optional)

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 ½ Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp warm water
  • ¾ Tbsp pure vanilla extract



  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the milk and apple cider vinegar. Set aside for about 10 minutes to allow it to thicken like buttermilk.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sucanat, spices, baking powder and salt.
  • Cut in the butter and using a pastry blender or your hands, incorporate the butter into the dry ingredients until you have pea-sized pieces.
  • Mix the applesauce and the maple syrup with the "buttermilk" and add the mixture to the dry ingredients.
  • When the dough comes together, gently fold in the chopped dates.
  • Place half the dough on a well floured surface and form it into a flat circle, about an inch thick. Slice it into 6-8 triangles and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Repeat with the remaining dough. Bake for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.


  • When the scones are cool, melt the butter in a small saucepan. Allow it to brown for a few minutes to achieve maximum flavor.
  • Whisk in the powdered sugar, water, and vanilla.
  • Remove from heat and drizzle over the scones while it is still warm.


Feel free to substitute buttermilk in place of the skim and vinegar mixture.
The glaze is best to be drizzled on right away, as it sets up quickly.
Calorie calculations do not include the glaze.
